Posted in HS Parent Coffee by sas on November 5th, 2009

Diana Wilson from the “Freedom from Chemical Dependency” (http://www.fcd.org) group had an informal discussion with parents in the Drama Theater on Monday, Nov 2, 2009. A number of presenters from the FCD group were on campus during the week to have discussions with Middle and High School students about drug and alcohol abuse issues. This podcast picks up Dianne’s talk about 5 minutes in. This session was an informal Q&A and as Dianne was the only one wearing a recorder, we apologize that the questions from the crowd may be impossible to hear.

Freedom from Chemical Dependency

Posted in Uncategorized, HS Parent Coffee, HS Counseling by sas on April 13th, 2009

As part of our Health Education program and ongoing commitment to prevention and wellness, health educators from FCD Educational Services are invited each year to work with our seventh, ninth and twelfth grade students. FCD (Freedom from Chemical Dependency) is a non-profit organization which has provided substance abuse prevention education for schools since 1976.

Part of the Community Library Speaker Series, this podcast is a recording of an FCD presentation for SAS parents from Monday, April 13, 2009. The first speaker on the podcast is Dr. Jeff Devens, SAS educational psychologist, who reviewed the results of a recently conducted student survey on alcohol use at SAS. Tim Ryan of FCD then offered parents support and guidance in helping their children to enjoy a drug-free adolescence and answered some questions from the audience. His topics included:

  • Effective ways to communicate with your child about drugs and drug use
  • Up-to-date facts about current drug use and trends
  • What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug experimentation
  • How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond
